Feverfew Tanacetum parthenium

Feverfew tanacetum parthenium is mostly known as a medicinal herb that is used against headaches and migraines. Most of the research into feverfew benefits started after a Welsh doctor's wife found that feverfew had treated her 50 year long history of migraines. The name feverfew is derived from the fact that traditionally feverfew was used to treat or cure fevers. However nowadays it is mostly used for migraines and headaches.

The parts used for medicinal purposes are the leaves and its key actions include anti-inflammatory and bitter. The  leaves of feverfew are dried and taken as a decoction, tablets and capsules. Fresh feverfew leaves can also be taken with food. It is important to only take the recommended dosage because feverfew is potentially toxic. It should be taken regularly for several months.

Feverfew can also be taken to cure arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Being a strong bitter, feverfew can stimulate appetite and digestive activity and to treat worms.

Warning when taking feverfew:-

Feverfew should not be taken when one is pregnant or is taking blood thinning medication. Care should also be taken because feverfew can cause mouth ulcers, gastrointestinal upset and allergic reactions.
