Astragalus has been used by the Chinese for more than 2,000 years to stimulate the body's immune system. By doing this astragalus enhances the body's ability to defend itself from infections and also to defeat infections.
The ability of astragalus to improve the body's immune system is derived from its riches in substances such as polysaccharides.
The chinese call this herb huang qi which means "yellow leader", this is because the root, which is the main part of astragalus used for medicine, is yellowish in colour.
Astragalus is particularly effective in fighting off colds, the flu, bronchitis, and sinus infections. Astragalus and echinacea are like cousins in terms of their abilities to fight off disease of the respiratory system. Just like echinacea, astragalus increases the body's production of T cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, interferon, and other immune cells. It is therefore important and crucial for those suffering from diseases such as HIV/Aids.
Dosage: Six dropperfuls of astragalus tincture
three times a day is the recommended dosage for treating flu, acute bronchitis and other respiratory diseases until the disease is gone. For capsules and tables the recommended dosage is 200mg of astragalus once or twice a day for three weeks. It is even more effective if it is alternated with echinacea and pau d'arco.
