Dr Berkinson, an MD and also holder of a PhD in microbiology with an advanced specialty in mushroom toxicology has prepared a protocol for treating hepatitis C. The protocol is what he calls a conservative triple antioxidant approach to the treatment of hepatitis C : Combination of lipoic acid (thioctic acid), silymarin, and selenium. This protocol to be explained in detail below, Dr Berkinson says, will protect the liver from free radical damage, increase levels of other fundamental antioxidants, and interfere with viral proliferation. I have personally read of one hepatitis C patient who has followed this protocol and has lived symptom free for more than twenty years. The protocol has helped him to keep the virus in check.
The protocol presents the following ways of supporting the liver in the treatment of hepatitis C:-
- Don't over use the liver. To effectively fight hepatitis C one needs to make sure that the liver is not overworked. The liver is especially overworked by alcohol consumption. If you suffering from Hepatitis C then you definitely need to stop taking alcohol. One should also avoid saturated fats that are found in red meat, margarine, processed foods and dairy products etc. Hepatitis C patients should also avoid caffeine, sugar, salt and refined carbohydrates. These only overtax the liver without helping the body nutritionally as they are nutrient deficient. Hot spices are also a no no. A hepatitis C patient should also avoid some medications such as acetaminophen found in Tylenol and other medications. This is because acetaminophen is the number one cause of liver failure.
- Do detoxification periodically. You can do a detoxification by just eating raw vegan foods or fresh vegetable juices for a week or so to cleanse or detoxify the body. During this period the patient should only take fruit, vegetable, fresh juices, herbal teas and potassium broth. Doing this can speed recovery. You can also even go further to perform an enema to cleanse the intestines of any old fecal matter which contribute to toxins trickling back into the blood veins in the intestines.
- Eat Liver friendly Foods to Strengthen the liver. All hepatitis patients should make sure that they always add turmeric in all meals. Turmeric should be used in stews, casseroles and vegetable dishes. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and has anticancer properties and is also liver friendly. Foods rich in chlorophyll such as wheat grass juice and others are also a must for all hepatitis C patients.
- Take liver friendly supplements: Supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, silymarin (an antioxidant from milk thistle), and other alpha lipoic acid have been shown in various tests to be very effective against hepatitis C. Vitamin C has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Take Some herbs : Many people living healthfully with hepatitis also recommend dandelion root, taking it as a tea or an infusion. Dandelion is great for protecting and stimulating the liver and improving bile flow. The dandelion can be taken as a coffee and make sure you use roasted dandelion root rather than the instant dandelion tea. Hepatitis C patients should also take milk thistle. Milk thistle is an excellent liver protective and regenerative herb.
- Application Castor Oil Packs on the Liver Area. Castor oil packs should be applied to the liver area for 2 hours, three to six days a week. The application of Castor oil packs will stimulate the liver to heal. Caution is in order here, make sure that your bowels are moving at least two times a day before you use Castor oil packs as the toxins the body gets rid of need to be eliminated from the body rather than get concentrated in the colon. This same rule should apply to the detoxification process as well, as your condition may worsen if the body fails to eliminate the toxins that are eliminated by the liver and other cleansing parts of the body.
- Take Vegetable and Fruit Juices: Take vegetable juices to nourish and heal the liver. Some herbalist recommend especially a vegetable juice that is a combination of chard, beetroot, fennel, celery, beetroot and cabbage. On fruit juices hepatitis patients should make sure that they almost always include grape juice which contains blood purifying and anti-inflammatory properties
Following the advice above you can manage to die at an old age with hepatitis C under control or in some cases some have even gotten rid of it completely.
