The conventional way of extracting essential oils from herbs is usually through steam distillation from aromatic plants. You can however make essential oil from home. To do this you need to place fresh herbs in a glass bottle and pour over olive oil or sesame oil. Then put a tightly fitting lid and place on a sunny place preferably near a window. You can leave this to macerate for a period of at least two weeks. During this period the oil will drain the constituents of the plant or herb. You can then filter the oil off using a muslin cloth. Squeeze the remainder from the muslin cloth to add to your essential oil. You should ensure that the oil is in an air tight bottle to ensure its efficacy over a maximum period of time.
For instance you can use St John's wort in essential oil in treating cuts and wounds and you can massage affected areas to relieve pain. When extracting St John's oil you will see within a short period of time the olive or sesame oil turning deep red colour.
