Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy : Alternate Hot and Cold Immersion Bath

Hydrotherapy - Alternate hot and cold immersion bath

While the treatment of blood poisoning or infections should, whenever possible, be directed by a competent physician, yet a simple and most effective home or hospital treatment is that of the alternate hot and cold immersion bath, a form of hydrotherapy. To carry out this form of hydrotherapy treatment, two pails, or better still, two oval-shaped tubs, are needed, one for hot water and the other for ice water. The temperature of the hot water should be about 108° to 110° F. to begin with. Gradually add hot water until the temperature is increased to 115° F or more, as hot as can be tolerated. The infected part, which is usually the hand or arm, is immersed in the hot water for two or three minutes, then in the ice water for twenty to thirty seconds, alternately. Between each change hot water should be added to keep up and increase the temperature of the hot tub. Large pieces of ice should be kept in the ice water.

The effectiveness and results of the hydrotherapy treatment depend upon maintaining the extremes in temperature. The treatment should continue for thirty minutes and be repeated every three or four hours, according to indications. In the interval between the treatments a heating compress should be applied to the part affected. The heating compress consists of a soft towel or several layers of gauze wrung out of cold water and placed around or over the affected area. This is covered with oiled silk or mackintosh and this, in turn, with a flannel blanket to maintain the heat. The moist compress should be large enough to cover considerably more than the affected area, so that the volume of blood will be increased. Also, the flannel should extend well up over the moist compress to more than cover it.

The alternate hot and cold immersion bath produces a revulsive effect, bringing more blood to the part and thus overcoming the infection, as it is by the defense properties of the blood that infection is overcome. The heating compress continues the process during the interval between treatments. Many cases of local infection in the hand, with its significant red streaks extending up the arm, which indicate that the infection is traveling through the lymph channels and tending toward general blood poisoning, have been cured by this simple treatment.

In those cases in which the infection has resulted in abscess formation and the part has been incised by the surgeon to allow drainage of pus, the utensils, water, and dressings should be sterilized to prevent secondary infection of the wound. Here the heating compress also favors the drainage of the pus. In some cases instead of applying the heating compress between the treatments, immerse the part in a continuous neutral bath, temperature 95° to 98° F. This favors the circulation and free drainage of the pus, reduces temperature, and relieves pain.

Hot Food Bath and Cold Mitten Friction

Along with the local treatment of blood poisoning, a general tonic treatment should be given; for example, alternate hot and cold to the spine with a hot foot bath, followed with a cold-mitten friction. The cold-mitten friction increases the number of blood cells in the circulation, especially the white cells, which means increased body defense. The white cells are the active agent in germ destruction. Winternitz and his associates have definitely shown that a cold-mitten friction will increase the number of white blood cells in the circulation 50 to 100 per cent. This tonic treatment may be given twice daily.

Among the diseases with which we should be prepared to deal are the common cold and influenza, which, if not properly treated, too often result in pneumonia.Fever is a symptom common to both, which is usually preceded by a feeling of chilliness. It is during the early symptoms that treatment should be instituted. The chilly feeling means that the blood is being driven from the blood vessels of the skin and is congesting the internal organs and mucous membranes of the body, especially of the respiratory tract. At the first symptom the patient should be put to bed with plenty of warm covers in a well-ventilated room. The room should be warmed preparatory to giving the treatment. If necessary, an enema should be given. While the preparation for the treatment is being made, the patient should be given a drink of hot lemonade or other hot drink. The treatment should be directed toward restoring the unbalanced circulation, and if it is instituted early and is properly given, often the cold may be aborted.

The first step of the treatment is a hot foot bath. In giving this, first place a newspaper or a rubber sheet under the patient's feet. The feet are then placed in a tub of water as hot as can be borne, and hot water is added from time to time to keep up the effect. Fomentations are then applied to the patient's chest. The fomentation should be folded so that it will fit snugly around the sides of the chest, up into the armpits, and well up around the throat. At least three fomentations should be given, and if the patient is decidedly chilly, more than this may be given. A short cold application over the chest, either by means of a cloth wrung from ice water or a smooth piece of ice rubbed quickly over the chest, should be made between the fomentations. The fomentations should be changed every three to five minutes or as soon as they become comfortable to the patient. If the patient is decidedly chilly, a fomentation may be applied to the spine at the beginning of the treatment and the patient allowed to lie on it during the treatment. A cold compress should be placed on the forehead during the treatment, and renewed every two or three minutes.

To complete the treatment a cold sponge bath, or better still, a cold-mitten friction, should be given. The cold-mitten friction has been described in a previous article. The feet are left in the hot water during the cold-mitten friction. They are then lifted, held over the tub while a dash of ice-cold water is given diem, and dried. If a fomentation has been applied to the spine, this is removed last and the cold friction is applied to the back. The heat applied to the feet and the hot applications to the surface of the body will have drawn the blood to the skin and to the extremities away from the congested organs. The cold-mitten friction, by its tonic effect upon the blood vessels, fixes the blood in the skin. If the treatment has been properly given and the desired reaction has been obtained, the patient will have a feeling of warmth and there will be a pink glow to the skin.

This treatment may be repeated two or three times daily as indicated by the symptoms. If there is a tendency to chilling during the cold-mitten friction, you may use tepid or even warm water. Care should be taken that the patient does not chill during this part of the treatment. This is especially true of the aged or debilitated individual. In this case it might be better to give fomentations alone and not the alternate hot and cold. In fact, the aged should be treated very cautiously, extremes of either heat or cold being avoided in their treatment. Seek the advice of your physician whenever possible, especially when dealing with old people.

If it is not possible to give the treatment described above, a full hot tub bath may be given to warm the patient, after which a cold pour over the body may be given, or the patient may be placed in bed and a cold-mitten friction given. A cold compress, renewed every two or three minutes, should be applied to the forehead during the hot bath, which should not be prolonged beyond ten minutes in the average case. However, if the person is vigorous, it may be prolonged to the point of perspiration. Prolonged perspiration in treatment of colds is debilitating and must be guarded against.

The patient should be encouraged to take plenty of fluids, water or fruit juices, either hot or cold, ten to twelve glasses daily. The diet should be light and nutritious.

In dealing with infectious diseases the control of fever is an important matter. Of course, fever can be reduced by drug medication. Drugs of this kind act by virtue of being a depressant to the body functions, and many times they interfere with the body defense mechanism, such as the work of the white blood cells. After all, fever should be looked upon as a symptom that needs only to be controlled, for up to a certain point it is beneficial, as it is an effort on the part of nature to burn up the poisons or toxins produced by disease germs. Of course a prolonged high temperature of 103° to 105° is not only distressing to the patient, but also harmful to the body tissues and organs, and must be brought under control. This is best accomplished by natural methods, and it is here again that the use of water internally and externally is the treatment par excellence.

Anciently it was considered a dangerous practice to give water to fever patients. Today we know that in fevers, water is needed in abundance. Used both internally and externally, it adds much to the comfort of the fever patient, and is an essential factor in his recovery. Water, taken internally, aids in controlling body temperature both by its cooling effect and by its action in the elimination of poisons. Applied externally as a cool sponge, water absorbs heat from the body and thus reduces temperature. It is well to keep in mind that the blood vessels are nearer the surface at the inside of the thigh and the arms, the axilla and the back of the knees, and over the abdomen. Thus a greater reduction of temperature may be brought about by prolonged cool sponging over these areas. Also the bathing of the face and neck, or a cold compress over this area, adds much to the comfort of the fever patient.
Cold Mitten Friction

Too vigorous friction in the application or in drying the patient should not be employed. This will create a reaction and tend to increase the temperature. Even though as a rule there is not much danger that a patient with a high temperature will take cold, yet this must be guarded against. If there is a tendency to chill, the patient may be prepared for the cold sponge bath by a hot foot bath or a hot fomentation to the spine or the abdomen in order to bring the blood to the surface.

In some cases a hot sponge bath may be given. The hot sponge bath brings more blood to the surface of the body, and thus the temperature is reduced by radiation of heat. A hot sponge may be prolonged from twenty to forty minutes. During the treatment it is well to keep the body covered, exposing only the part to which the application is made at any one time.

Care should be taken by proper placing of towels to keep the bed from becoming wet. In treating very high temperatures, in cases in which it is difficult to control the fever and the patient does not chill, the water may be allowed to evaporate from the body. This tends to cool the body. A very useful measure to reduce temperature, especially in children, is the prolonged cool enema. This is best given with a Y tube, so that the water can run in and out and not overdistend the bowel.

In giving treatments it must always be borne in mind that we are dealing with a person as well as with a disease. As we do not all react to treatment in the same way, our hdyrotherapy treatment must be modified to meet the individual reaction and characteristics. This requires good judgment as well as skill. Do not neglect to seek the advice of your family physician in dealing with symptoms which you do not understand.

Cystitis : Natural Remedies

Cystitis is the inflamation of the bladder that is mostly caused by a  bacterial infection of the bladder. This can be painful and can become serious if the infection spreads to the kidneys. If it caused by a bacteria the condition may be referred to as Urinay Tract Infection (UTI) .Cystitis may also be the result of drug reaction, some feminine sprays and a complication of another illness.

Symptoms and Signs of Cystitis or Urinary Tract Infection
  • Traces of blood in the urine
  • A strong and persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Cloudy or strong smelling urine.
  • Pelvic area discomfort
  • low grade fever.

Below are some natural remedies such as hydrotherapy and the taking of some herbs that will help the body to heal itself from cystitis.

Natural Treatment for Cystitis

Use hot fomentations alone; or alternating with brief cold compresses accompanied by much friction. Cover the low abdomen and upper thighs with the fomentation, keeping it hot continuously for eight minutes, then 20 to 30 seconds of cold. Repeat three or four times. A hot sitz bath may be substituted. A heating pad or heat lamp centered over the suprapubic area may be used continuously between other treatments.

Give buchu or other diuretic tea, 1 cup per  hour during the acute phase until symptoms subside - usually about four to five hours. The diet should be carefully controlled : no sugar or other concentrated sweeteners, no oil, no caffeine or other methylxanthines (found in coffee, tea, colas and chocolate), no pepper or other spices, alcohol, baking soda or baking powder products, and only two meals daily - breakfast and mid-day meal. No food or drink between meals except plenty of water and clear herb tea.

Open Letter From Dr. Richard Schulze On Healing and Responsibility

Dear Interested Reader,

Thank you for your letter. I wish I could answer your questions personally and directly but I am legally gagged.
I will make the following suggestions:-

Just follow the basic information in these courses; forget the specifics at first. It will make a dramatic change in your health, and will change your life. I developed and used these programs myself for my own dramatic personal healing. The same routines and formulae in my clinic healed tens of thousands worldwide. These programs work on everybody and for everything. The results you will get on these programs will be a perfect reflection of the amount of time, dedication and energy you put into doing the programs themselves.

I know that we are all different, and our specific problems seem very unique, but I assure you they are not, and I have most likely seen hundreds of people with your same problems, in your same dilemma, in my clinic, and I have seen them all get well. I know that I can't offer you the same personal service, but I can offer it other ways such as the videos, audios and written material.

Everyone wants the specifics, but the basics of getting and staying well are so powerful, that 98% of the time the specifics are not necessary. The specifics rarely work on their own anyway, or only give temporary results. Getting well is not as difficult as you may think; it is not complicated. It usually takes a lot more dedication, time and energy to make yourself sick. Follow the basic principals of Natural Healing, be patient, and you will get well.

Maybe the doctors say you are dying, we are all dying and have been since the day we were born. I am not trying to stop death, I am talking about increasing the quantity and quality of life. If you are out of time and are at death's door, or even if you or your loved one still dies, these programs will make death more comfortable, peaceful and usually pain-free. Physical death, the eventual physical end for all of us, we will all experience it. I strongly feel that this is something that we should experience at home, with our loved ones, blessed out, happy, and reflecting on the wonder of life and giving thoughts to our loved ones. All of my patients who have had a loved one die at home, using natural healing, have had a blessed, beautiful experience, and without pain. Who wants to die in a hospital, with strangers, and tubes stuck everywhere and doped up with drugs, incoherent for this beautiful experience?

Probably the only reason you are sick is because the life you led was not healthy enough for your particular constitution. I don't care what your relatives, neighbors or friends eat or do, they are not you, and some people have stronger constitutions and can get away with more than others. Who cares what George Burns does; his lifestyle would have killed me by 20. So, stop blaming yourself or others, get rid of your excuses, your why ME's and your cop-outs; they won't help you get well.

I am not saying this is you, but most people who write, in fact most of the patients I saw for 20 years, and my students and even myself at times, want to work on the specific problems and skip some, or most, or all of the basics. This is what doctors do and why we are fed up with medicine. This is why most of us have the same problems coming back to haunt us, or worse ones.

The following is a review of the basics that most people skip. Natural Healing must be a broad spectrum program, a lifestyle, not just an herb for a disease. If my patients did not achieve the following basics within one month of their first visit, I would throw them out of my clinic. I am a hard ass, a butt kicker, because hard work, not sympathy, gets people well. I have tossed little old greyhaired ladies out the door, I have shoved others out in their wheelchairs and told them to enjoy their life as a cripple. Many people write me and say they wish they could only talk to me, or see me one time for a consultation. Some even weep and say if only I would have known of you when you were still in practice. I tell most of you that I would have thrown your butt out the door too. Don't think I'm a nice guy, I am a very tough Natural Healing Evangelist.

Only 10% of my patients ever made it through the first month. Everyone said they were willing to do anything to get well, but when they found out what anything was, they wiped out.Ninety percent of the people who came to see me didn't have what it takes to get well using Natural Healing, and I sent them packing. Why do you think that medicine and pharmaceuticals are a trillion dollar industry? It's because people don't want to take responsibility for their own health or "just say no to drugs." People want the temporary "quick fix" of medicine. For many, life isn't worth living if they have to give up too much of the "good life". Most people wouldn't make near the sacrifices I made to overcome my heart disease.

But, that 10% who stayed, and did the work, well you have heard the miracle stories. Almost every one of them got a miracle healing. They came looking for a good doctor; I was looking for good patients! I am not passing judgement on you and I give you total permission to do anything you want, including drugs and surgery to get well, or to even stay sick; who am I to judge? But you are asking for my help, my experience, and here it is:
FOOD: Until you are well, regardless of your disease whether it be headaches or cancer, you must be a total vegetarian. Sure, I have seen meat eaters get well, but not as fast and not as completely. You may not have the time to waste. Why do the program halfway? I won't go into all the details, but all animal food is unhealthy. It is full of fat, cholesterol, toxins, drugs, steroids, growth hormones, antibiotics, bacteria and parasites. I don't care how little of it you eat, or if you think that it is normal to eat a little, or what your parents did or your protein-need fantasy, or even if you eat animal food that is organic and the animal was allowed to pray before its head was cut off. Eating animals is wrong for health and environmental reasons, not to mention moral reasons; so stop it. Our ancestors ate this food to survive; it is not necessary anymore. This is 1995 not 1895, let's move on to a cleaner, more nutritious food program. I know it may be difficult for you but don't fool yourself for a minute, If you are eating anything that had a face or came from anything with a face, I would throw you out of my office, get it? Believe me, I know what I am asking. It is un-American, and may be difficult for you to achieve after a life of eating blood, but I also know it will give you the results you want. Also, get a juicer and use it; it can save your life - and use SuperFoods every day.
CLEANSING: Clean the bowel, clean the liver and clean the blood.
EXERCISE: Move every day, sweat and move more! Do your hot and cold showers!
EMOTIONAL: Quit blaming the program, the herbs, the routines, the doctors and me. Take a good look into the mirror. There is the person who is responsible for your current health. I know you may hate the doctors and blame them, but you walked into their office in the first place. You are the only person who can help you, so get a grip, stop feeling sorry for yourself and get to work.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU TAKE? Many people spend 30 or 40 years killing themselves with cigarettes, beer, wine or whiskey, coffee, black tea or soft drinks, high fat, sugar and low-fiber diets, junk food, no exercise, negative television and a bad attitude. These same people then worry if a herb may hurt them, if they are getting enough protein on a vegetarian diet or if they can physically take a health routine. Get real! You're lucky to be alive after what you have done. I have always found that a person's breaking point is about a million times past where they think it is. Most people who are taken hostage, starved and given forced labor end up healthier. Maybe you should consider getting kidnapped by a hostile government.
I know I have been tough, but that is the only way I have seen miracles happen, and I want more than anything for you to have one.

Good Luck and God Bless You,

Cure yourself With Cayenne Pepper: Cayenne Pepper Healing Benefits

Dr Richard Schulze, medical herbalist of 'there are no incurable diseases' fame says, "If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other." The same belief is shared by his mentor the Late Dr Christopher. When you consider the testimonies of cancer patients and other 'incurables' who have been healed by natural remedies prescribed by these natural remedies experts, you cannot but take notice when they beat the drum for cayenne pepper.

We therefore need to learn more about this herb as it may one day save our life or the life of our loved ones. Let us therefore master this herb by learning from the experts themselves.

Dr Richard Schulze tells students who ask him on What are the ten most important herbs to have in the home that, "At the top of the list is cayenne pepper, because it will make the other nine work better."

Dr Richard Schulze says that "If you take cayenne pepper in capsules, you may be wasting your time and never getting the cures I got with my patients." Cayenne pepper has to be taken orally if we are to experience its maximum healing benefits. Other forms might be helpful but not as helpful as taking it orally.

What happens is that much of cayenne's healing action occurs right in your mouth. As cayenne touches your tongue, the cayenne absorbs in seconds and nerve endings send signals throughout the body - sending waves of fresh blood to wherever you are sick. New healing begins in seconds. Let us rememember that inorder for healing to take place fresh blood has to reach the diseased part to cleanse and bring food in the form of enzymes etc to the cells. These surges of fresh blood do not occur when you bypass the mouth by taking capsules.

Therefore treatment such as hydrotherapy and taking cayenne assist the body in making sure that fresh blood reaches those areas that are diseased. To make sure that blood goes in and out of those diseased parts we need treatments such as the hot and cold treatments so that the fresh blood is able to remove the toxins and bring them down to the body's lungs and kidneys for purification. It works as a pump, heat bringing blood to the surface and the cold constricting the vessels pushing the blood down to be purified in the cleaning organs of the body such as the lungs and kidneys.

As most herbalists say all diseases is the result of blockage and any treatment if it is to be long lasting has to treat that blockage. This requires that we stop taking the things that caused the blockage and do things that bring healing and avoids such blockages.

Cayenne helps all these healing processes by making sure the herbs that we take are able to reach the diseased parts by increasing the speed of the flow of blood in the body.

Even scientist are now recognising the benefits of cayenne pepper. In a recent letter to the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine, three Italian doctors describe how they were able to reduce patients' reported dyspepsia symptoms by more than half -  by prescribing red pepper powder. In a study of 30 patients with  functional dyspepsia, half of the participants received a placebo, while the other half took 2.5 grams of red pepper powder each day (divided into capsules taken before each of three meals). Both groups took their respective treatments for five weeks, and rated their symptoms each day on a scale of zero  to three (higher scores indicated more severe symptoms). By the third week, the red pepper group showed a significant advantage over the control group. And by week five, the pepper group's symptoms had declined 60 percent from their baseline scores - while the control group's scores had only decreased about half as much. The symptom scores included ratings for pain, a feeling of fullness, nausea, and an overall score. The red pepper powder produced significant gains in all four areas.

Cayenne pepper is also a very high source of Vitamins A and C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium, which is one of the reasons it is good for the heart

Dr Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute also says cayenne can be used against migraines. She says, 'Just at the start of a migraine, put five to ten drops of a cayenne extract in the nostril on the side of the headache. Hold the medicine in the nostril. The headache is usually gone in about 10 minutes. Even after headaches are well established the cayenne extract will work fairly well. In these cases it may need to be used on both sides. Interestingly enough, the pain in the nostrils is not as intense as one would think it could be. The way to make the tincture is a quarter of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in one cup of pure grain alcohol from a liquor store at 80 - 95% concentration, the best solvent range for cayenne. Let is set for a day or two and it is then ready for use. It can be filtered to get rid of the solid portion, or merely allowed to settle and the top portion poured off.

Cayenne pepper has also been known to treat heart attacks. A drop in the mouth of cayenne tincture in the mouth has been known to stop heart attacks in minutes.

For more details and how to use cayenne for various ailments I would urge to buy Sam Biser's book, Curing With Cayenne: The untold , Unknown and Unpublished Facts About How To Cure with the Greatest Herb of All Time!.It is based on the interview Sam Biser had with Dr Richard Schulze, a foremost medical herbalist who has assisted scores of patients to cure themselves of incurable diseases such as cancer.

Cure Yourself From Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) which is found in the blood of persons who have this disease. This form of hepatitis is much more likely than Hepatitis A to progress to chronic active hepatitis and eventually cirrhosis or possibly cancer of the liver. It is most often spread by contaminated blood products being introduced into the body, either from blood transfusions, accidental sticking with needles, or sharing needles by drug-users. Sexual contact, either heterosexual or homosexual, can also be a mode of infection. Not everybody who gets hepatitis C, not even all of those who get some scarring in the liver, have a lot of difficulty with hepatitis C. Unfortunately there is no way to predict at the outset which person may be more likely to have severe liver damage and which will receive no damage at all.

Not everybody who gets hepatitis C, not even all of those who get some scarring in the liver, have a lot of difficulty with hepatitis C. Unfortunately we have no way to predict at the outset which one may be more likely to have severe liver damage and which will receive no damage at all. There are several things that will be very helpful for you with hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is difficult to treat, but we use hydrotherapy, exercise, a totally vegetarian diet with nothing between meals, and no free fats or free sugars but adequate numbers of nuts and seeds, whole grains, and beans. Breakfast should consist of fruit and whole grains and lunch should consist of vegetables and whole grains. Either meal should have nuts, seeds, or legumes.

Nutrition Recommendations

Maintain proper nourishment using a totally vegetarian diet, principally consisting of fruits and whole grains with adequate amounts of nuts and seeds, and beans. Breakfast should consist of fruit and whole grains, and lunch should consist of vegetables and whole grains. Either meal should also have nuts, seeds, or legumes. Do not overeat or anything else that will put a burden on the liver. Use no more than three dishes at a meal.

Take flaxseed daily (two tablespoons freshly ground each morning on cereal or at lunch sprinkled on salads or rice, etc.).

Avoid free fats and oils, as in margarine and salad oils. Also avoid heavy protein foods, even though vegetable in origin, and all free sugars. Do not use spices, vinegar, baking soda, baking powder, caffeinated beverages, or alcohol.

You should also be taking high-potency lecithin (get it from Twinlabs)—50% phosphatidyl choline—1 teaspoon per day.

Herbal Remedies

We also advise that individuals with Hepatitis C take certain herbal remedies such as Silymarin and ginkgo. Take the silymarin, derived from the milk thistle, one cup of tea or two capsules three or four times a day. In chronic active cases, it should be continued indefinitely.

Japanese clinicians have used glycyrrhizin, an extract of licorice, for over 20 years in hepatitis with good results. Since the extract is not currently available in the U.S., licorice tea may be used. Caution: Long-term use may cause salt and fluid retention, and increased blood pressure. It should be used with caution in people with hypertension; and probably should be used only two weeks of the month in those with normal pressure.

Phyllanthus urinaria increased antibodies from 51% to 89% over a three-month period in one study. It is believed this herb can be of help in hepatitis.—Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine 126(4):350;1995.

Astragalus root, licorice root, and turmeric are all good herbs to use in hepatitis C. —Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine 3:77;1997. Goldenseal and echinacea are also recommended.

Gently boil one and a half quarts of water to which has been added half a cup of Echinacea purpurea root; three tablespoons of milk thistle seed; two heaping tablespoons of Oregon grape root; and two tablespoons of dandelion root. Remove from the heat after 25 minutes; strain. This is one day’s dose. Give it in small divided doses scattered throughout the day. If the patient tolerates it all right, the second day the dose should be doubled.

Eurocel, an herbal blend beneficial in Hepatitus C cases is available from Nutricology Allergy Research Group (800-545-9960). This product helps to cause HCV-RNA to return to normal. The liver enzymes become low again. The herbs used are Patrinia villosa, Artemisia capillaris, and Schizandra fructus. Artichoke capsules, two capsules three or four times daily, are liver protective.

The herbal program can be directed by Dr. Christopher Deatherage, tel: 417-683-1300.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy should be given in the acute phase in the form of hot baths and fomentations over the liver. The hot baths can be used to elevate the mouth temperature to around 102 degrees for 15 treatments (see instructions in Home Remedies ). The fomentations over the liver should be kept hot for 15 minutes and followed by a cold compress for one minute and repeated three times each day = 45 minutes. In chronic active hepatitis, artificial fever treatments two or three days a week with fomentations over the liver on the off days can be beneficial. The hydrotherapy is described in our book Home Remedies under fomentations to the abdomen.

Charcoal

Charcoal compresses and charcoal by mouth (one tablespoon three to four times daily) as well as wheat bran by mouth (one tablespoon with each meal) can reduce the amount of bile salts and the degree of jaundice.

Treatment for Jaundice

The European Journal of Clinical Investigation, 28(5)359-363, May 1998, states that when jaundice produces itching it can be relieved by giving guar gum.

Other Suggestions for Hepatitis C

It is quite proper even in the acute phase to be active, but avoid becoming overly tired. Prolonged bed rest can lead to increased symptoms and weakness.

Drink water generously. Avoid constipation and any other toxic condition.

Avoid any kind of toxic fumes, cleaning compounds and drugs, including birth control pills, aspirin, and corticosteroids (such as cortisone and prednisone) as they encourage later relapses.

Note: I would urge readers interested in learning more on how to treat hepatitis C and all diseases naturally to buy Dr Agatha Thrash's book, Home Remedies. The books deals with the science behind treatments such as hydrotherapy and detailed procedures and equipment that you can use to perform hydrotherapy. The book also tells the conditions under which these treatments may be taken and the necessary precautions to take. I have found this book to be the most informative since it is done by someone trained as a conventional doctor but now promotes natural remedies buy the book, Natural Remedies and you wont regret it and you will learn simple but powerful procedures that have helped me personally. EXPERIENCES OF A HEALTH REFORMER IN THE USE OF NATURAL REMEDIES AND

[These are experiences of an 18th century health reformer on using charcoal, herbs, and simple remedies in the treatment of disease. In the 18th century, medical doctors were prescribing such drugs as arsenic, strychnine, calomel, and mercury. In an effort to avoid the serious side effects of such preparations, simple remedies were resorted to. In as much as drugs today still have side effects, it would be worthwhile to become familiar with an intelligent use of these remedies.]

After seeing so much harm done by the administering of drugs, I cannot use them, and cannot testify in their favor. I must be true to the light given me by the Lord.

The treatment we gave when the sanitarium was first established required earnest labor to combat disease. We did not use drug concoctions; we followed hygienic methods. This work was blessed by God. It was a work in which the human instrumentality could cooperate with God in saving life. There should be nothing put into the human system that would leave its baleful influence behind. And to carry out the light on this subject, to practice hygienic treatment, and to educate on altogether different lines of treating the sick, was the reason given me why we should have sanitariums established in various localities.

I have been pained when many students have been encouraged to go to _____ to receive an education in the use of drugs. The light which I have received has placed an altogether different complexion on the use made of drugs than is given at _____ or at the sanitarium. We must become enlightened on these subjects. The intricate names given the medicines are used to cover up the matter, so that none will know what is given them as remedies unless they obtain a dictionary to find out the meaning of these names.

The Lord has given some simple herbs of the field that at times are beneficial; and if every family were educated in how to use these herbs in case of sickness, much suffering might be prevented, and no doctor need be called. These old-fashioned, simple herbs, used intelligently, would have recovered many sick who have died under drug medication.
One of the most beneficial remedies is pulverized charcoal, placed in a bag and used in fomentations. This is a most successful remedy. If wet in smartweed boiled, it is still better. I have ordered this in cases where the sick were suffering great pain, and when it has been confided to me by the physician that he thought it was the last before the close of life. Then I suggested the charcoal, and the patient slept, the turning point came, and recovery was the result. To students when injured with bruised hands and suffering with inflammation, I have prescribed this simple remedy, with perfect success. The poison of inflammation was overcome, the pain removed, and healing went on rapidly. The most severe inflammation of the eyes will be relieved by a poultice of charcoal, put in a bag, and dipped in hot or cold water, as will best suit the case. This works like a charm.

I expect you will laugh at this; but if I could give this remedy some outlandish name that no one knew but myself, it would have greater influence. . . . But the simplest remedies may assist nature, and leave no baleful effects after their use.—Letter 82, 1897

There are many simple herbs which, if our nurses would learn the value of, they could use in the place of drugs, and find very effective. Many times I have been applied to for advice as to what should be done in cases of sickness or accident, and I have mentioned some of these simple remedies, and they have proved helpful.

On one occasion a physician came to me in great distress. He had been called to attend a young woman who was dangerously ill. She had contracted fever while on the campground, and was taken to our school building near Melbourne, Australia. But she became so much worse that it was feared she could not live. The physician, Dr. Merritt Kellogg, came to me and said, "Sister White, have you any light for me on this case? If relief cannot be given our sister, she can live but a few hours." I replied, "Send to a blacksmith's shop, and get some pulverized charcoal; make a poultice of it, and lay it over her stomach and sides." The doctor hastened away to follow out my instructions. Soon he returned, saying, "Relief came in less than half an hour after the application of the poultices. She is now having the first natural sleep she has had for days."

I have ordered the same treatment for others who were suffering great pain, and it has brought relief and been the means of saving life. My mother had told me that snake bites and the sting of reptiles and poisonous insects could often be rendered harmless by the use of charcoal poultices. When working on the land at Avondale, Australia, the workmen would often bruise their hands and limbs, and this in many cases resulted in such severe inflammation that the worker would have to leave his work for some time. One came to me one day in this condition, with his hand tied in a sling. He was much troubled over the circumstance; for his help was needed in clearing the land I said to him, "Go to the place where you have been burning the timber, and get me some charcoal from the eucalyptus tree, pulverize it, and I will dress your hand." This was done, and the next morning he reported that the pain was gone. Soon he was ready to return to his work.

I write these things that you may know that the Lord has not left us without the use of simple remedies which, when used, will not leave the system in the weakened condition in which the use of drugs so often leaves it. We need well-trained nurses who can understand how to use the simple remedies that nature provides for restoration to health, and who can teach those who are ignorant of the laws of health how to use these simple but effective cures.

He who created men and women has an interest in those who suffer. He has directed in the establishment of our sanitariums and in the building up of schools close to our sanitariums, that they may become efficient mediums in training men and women for the work of ministering to suffering humanity. In the treatment of the sick, poisonous drugs need not be used. Alcohol or tobacco in any form must not be recommended, lest some soul be led to imbibe a taste for these evil things.—Letter 90, 1908

In regard to that which we can do for ourselves, there is a point that requires careful, thoughtful consideration. I must become acquainted with myself, I must be a learner always as to how to take care of this building, the body God has given me, that I may preserve it in the very best condition of health. I must eat those things which will be for my very best good physically, and I must take special care to have my clothing such as will conduce to a healthful circulation of the blood. I must not deprive myself of exercise and air. I must get all the sunlight that it is possible for me to obtain.

I must have wisdom to be a faithful guardian of my body. I should do a very unwise thing to enter a cool room when in a perspiration; I should show myself an unwise steward to allow myself to sit in a draft, and thus expose myself so as to take cold. I should be unwise to sit with cold feet and limbs, and thus drive back the blood from the extremities to the brain or internal organs. I should always protect my feet in damp weather.

I should eat regularly of the most healthful food which will make the best quality of blood, and I should not work intemperately if it is in my power to avoid doing so.

And when I violate the laws God has established in my being, I am to repent and reform, and place myself in the most favorable condition under the doctors God has provided—pure air, pure water, and the healing, precious sunlight.

Water can be used in many ways to relieve suffering. Drafts of clear, hot water taken before eating (half a quart, more or less), will never do any harm, but will rather be productive of good.

A cup of tea made from catnip herb will quiet the nerves.

Hop tea will induce sleep. Hop poultices over the stomach will relieve pain.

If the eyes are weak, if there is pain in the eyes, or inflammation, soft flannel cloths wet in hot water and salt, will bring relief quickly.

When the head is congested, if the feet and limbs are put in a bath with a little mustard, relief will be obtained.

There are many more simple remedies which will do much to restore healthful action to the body. All these simple preparations the Lord expects us to use for ourselves, but man's extremities are God's opportunities. If we neglect to do that which is within the reach of nearly every family, and ask the Lord to relieve pain when we are too indolent to make use of these remedies within our power, it is simply presumption. The Lord expects us to work in order that we may obtain food. He does not propose that we shall gather the harvest unless we break the sod, till the soil, and cultivate the produce. Then God sends the rain and the sunshine and the clouds to cause vegetation to flourish. God works and man cooperates with God. Then there is seedtime and harvest.

God has caused to grow out of the ground, herbs for the use of man, and if we understand the nature of those roots and herbs, and make a right use of them, there would not be a necessity of running for the doctor so frequently, and people would be in much better health than they are today. I believe in calling upon the Great Physician when we have used the remedies I have mentioned.—Letter 35, 1890.

Do all that you possibly can to perfect the institution inside and out. Be sure that your premises are in the best of order. Let there be nothing about them that will make a disagreeable impression of the minds of the patients.

Encourage the patients to live healthfully and to take an abundance of exercise. This will do much to restore them to health. Let seats be placed under the shade of the trees, that the patients may be encouraged to spend much time out-of-doors. And a place should be provided, enclosed either with canvas or with glass, where, in cooler weather, the patients can sit in the sun without feeling the wind. . . .

Fresh air and sunshine, cheerfulness within and without the institution, pleasant words and kindly acts—these are the remedies that the sick need, and God will crown with success your efforts to provide these remedies for the sick ones who come to the sanitarium. By happiness and cheerfulness and expressions of sympathy and hopefulness for others, your own soul will be filled with light and peace. And never forget that the sunshine of God's blessing is worth everything to us.

Teach nurses and patients the value of those health-restoring agencies that are freely provided by God, and the usefulness of simple things that are easily obtained.

I will tell you a little about my experience with charcoal as a remedy. For some forms of indigestion, it is more efficacious than drugs. A little olive oil into which some of this powder has been stirred tends to cleanse and heal. I find it is excellent. Pulverized charcoal from eucalyptus wood we have used freely in cases of inflammation. . . .

Always study and teach the use of the simplest remedies, and the special blessing of the Lord may be expected to follow the use of these means which are within the reach of the common people.—Letter 100, 1903.

A brother was taken sick with inflammation of the bowels and bloody dysentery. The man was not a careful health reformer, but indulged his appetite. We were just preparing to leave Texas, where we had been laboring for several months, and we had carriages prepared to take away this brother and his family, and several others who were suffering from malarial fever. My husband and I thought we would stand this expense rather than have the heads of several families die and leave their wives and children unprovided for.

Two or three were taken in a large spring wagon on spring mattresses. But this man who was suffering from inflammation of the bowels, sent for me to come to him. My husband and I decided that it would not do to move him. Fears were entertained that mortification had set in. Then the thought came to me like a communication from the Lord to take pulverized charcoal, put water upon it, and give this water to the sick man to drink, putting bandages of the charcoal over the bowels and stomach. We were about one mile from the city of Denison, but the sick man's son went to a blacksmith's shop, secured the charcoal, and pulverized it, and then used it according to the directions given. The result was that in half an hour there was a change for the better. We had to go on our journey and leave the family behind, but what was our surprise the following day to see their wagon overtake us. The sick man was lying in a bed in the wagon. The blessing of God had worked with the simple means used.—Letter 182, 1899

We need a hospital so much. On Thursday Sister Sara McEnterfer was called to see if she could do anything for Brother B's little son, who is eighteen months old. For several days he has had a painful swelling on the knee, supposed to be from the bite of some poisonous insect. Pulverized charcoal, mixed with flaxseed, was placed upon the swelling, and this poultice gave relief at once. The child had screamed with pain all night, but when this was applied, he slept. Today she has been to see the little one twice. She opened the swelling in two places, and a large amount of yellow matter and blood was discharged freely. The child was relieved of its great suffering. We thank the Lord that we may become intelligent in using the simple things within our reach to alleviate pain, and successfully remove its cause.—Manuscript 68, 1899.
