Infectious mononucleosis also known as kissing disease or glandular fever is an infection common in adolescence and children. It is caused by Epstein-Barr virus which is a human herpes virus. The designation "mononucleosis" refers to an increase in one type of white blood cells i.e. lymphocytes in the bloodstream relative to the other blood components as a result of the EBV infection.
