Butterbur, Umbrella Plant (Petasites officinalis) Herbal Remedies


Butterbur, Umbrella Plant (Petasites officinalis) is also commonly known as Bog Rhubarb and Flapperdock. Butterbur Petasites officinalis root is famous for its fever reducing properties. It gained a great reputation during time of the plague. Butterbur tea promotes perspiration and is used for fever, shortness of breath, gout and epilepsy. Some trials have shown a preparation of Butterbur root to be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks

Butterbur leaves are used to treet sprains, dislocations and sore feet, burns, malignant ulcer and wound. The leaves  are crushed and applied to the wound or the infected part. Some herbalists advise that this application should be repeated several times a day.

How to Prepare Butterbur petasites officinalis Infusion.

One heap teaspoon of roots is soaked in cold water overnight, warmed and strained in the morning.  l and 2 cups are sipped during the day.
